Open It! Beer Review: World Wide Stout by Dogfish Head

World Wide Stout is “a very dark beer brewed with a ridiculous amount of barley”, and made it into my Open It! list because 1) everyone said how good it is and 2) it is in my 1001 beer list. This is a big bad beer, in a good way, with lots of booze. World Wide Stout is way out there in both alcohol content and flavor. I am surprised that this beer was successfully brewed to still taste like beer with ABV 15-20%. Dogfish does not print ABV on WWS bottles, but gave a range of 15-20% on its website. I have issues with beer that can not tell you how strong it is. Put the ABV on the bottle so you know what you are getting into. I also felt the booze was overdone. The beer could have been every bit as flavorful with half the ABV. This beer was made for one thing only: alcohol content. I tried it, I liked it, but may never get it again. I hate when one, ten-dollar, twelve ounce beer wipes me out.
Tasting Notes:
Poured into a snifter, World Wide Stout is black with a hint of ruby, and pour with virtually no head. Smells of booze, caramel, chocolate and dried fruit which is rather inviting. The flavor is just like the nose but smooth with the added flavor of licorice and a bit of tartness. Overall, well done just dial down the alcohol content.
